A backup report with a green checkmark is reassuring—but it is not the same as knowing you can recover. A practical recovery plan considers what is protected, what the business needs first, and whether restoration has actually been tested. SupportMax provides managed backups with restore testing, without pretending any system is risk-free. Review our backup and disaster recovery approach, then ask what recovery readiness should look like for your business.
Where plans fall short
Where backup plans usually fail
Most businesses have some kind of backup. The trouble shows up on the day it's needed: something wasn't included, nobody decided what comes back first, or a restore was never tried.
01
Backups that have never been restored
A backup job that reports success isn't proof. Until a restore has been tried, nobody knows whether the data comes back complete and usable.
02
Nobody is sure what's covered
Files on laptops, shared drives, email, and cloud apps often live in different places, and some get left out without anyone noticing.
03
No agreed recovery order
When several systems are down at once, teams lose time deciding what to bring back first instead of following a plan.
04
Backups exposed to the same attack
If backups can be reached with the same accounts as everything else, ransomware can damage them too. Access to backups deserves its own protection.
Backup vs. recovery
Three questions every business should ask
Backup is about keeping copies of your data. Recovery is about getting the business working again. A good plan answers three questions in plain English before anything is set up.
Schedule a Free Consultation1. What must be protected?
List the data and systems the business can't run without: email, shared files, line-of-business applications, and the information your team uses every day.
2. How quickly must operations recover?
Decide which systems need to come back first and how long the business can realistically work without them. Those answers shape the right backup and recovery approach.
3. How will the recovery plan be verified?
A plan is proven only when a restore actually works. Agree on how recovery will be tested, how often, and who reviews the results. Our guide explains how to test business backups.

Business continuity
How backup and recovery support business continuity
Backup keeps copies of your data. Disaster recovery gets your systems working again. Business continuity is the wider plan for keeping the business running while that happens, including people, communication, and priorities, not just technology. Reliable backup and recovery are the foundation of business continuity IT for Los Angeles businesses. SupportMax can also write that plan with you: see business continuity planning. To keep critical systems running in the cloud during an outage, see disaster recovery as a service; for email and files in the cloud, see Microsoft 365 backup.
Business continuity planning →How we start
How we set up backup and recovery

01
Assess
We work through what must be protected, how quickly operations must recover, and how recovery will be verified.
02
Plan
We agree on the backup approach, retention, recovery order, and testing schedule in plain English. Backups keep a copy in the cloud, away from your office network, and immutable backup storage, where the copy can't be changed or deleted, even by an attacker, is available on request.
03
Implement
We set up managed backups in phases, with clear communication and minimal disruption.
04
Test and manage
We test restores on the agreed schedule, monitor your systems, and keep the plan current as the business changes.
Client stories
What clients say about backup and recovery with SupportMax
We worried about losing data and had no real recovery plan.
“We knew backups existed, but nobody could tell us how quickly we'd actually recover if something happened. SupportMax made our backup and recovery setup something we could trust.”
Enzo Kingsmont - Owner, Healthcare Practice
They explained our risk in plain English.
“SupportMax explained what would happen in different failure scenarios and what we needed to fix. There was no fear-mongering—just clear information and a practical plan.”
Julian Hawthorncroft - Practice Manager, Dental
We know our data is protected and recoverable.
“For the first time, we have confidence that our data is backed up properly and that we could recover if something went wrong. That peace of mind is worth a lot.”
Jalen Cloverstone - CFO, Nonprofit

Data recovery
Request a data recovery quote
No backup of the files you need? We’ll try what’s safe in-house and, if it needs a clean-room lab, get you a free lab evaluation and quote first. Recovery isn’t guaranteed, but it’s no data, no charge.
Until we talk, stop using the drive and don’t reset or erase it. If it’s encrypted, find the BitLocker or FileVault recovery key. Without it, no one can recover the data.

What does backup and disaster recovery include?
With SupportMax it includes managed backups of your business data, restore testing, recovery planning, and help containing and recovering from outages and security incidents. What gets protected, how long it's kept, and the order of recovery are decided with you during the assessment.
What's the difference between backup and disaster recovery?
Backup is keeping copies of your data. Disaster recovery is the plan and the work to get systems and people working again after an outage, a hardware failure, or a security incident.
Which systems do you back up?
That depends on your business. During the assessment we identify the systems and data you can't run without, your retention requirements, and your recovery priorities, then recommend coverage to match.
How quickly can we recover after an outage?
It depends on what failed, what was protected, and the recovery priorities agreed in your plan. We don't promise a recovery time we haven't planned and tested with you. Deciding how quickly each system needs to come back is part of the assessment.
How often are backups tested?
Restore testing is part of the service. The testing schedule is agreed with you during the assessment, based on how important each system is to the business.
What should we do if we're hit by ransomware?
If you can, disconnect affected computers from the network, then call us right away at 310.331.8119. SupportMax helps contain the incident and recover. Our guide to what happens after a ransomware attack walks through the stages, and CISA's #StopRansomware guide also explains the first steps.
