What Happens After a Ransomware Attack?

Ransomware attack recovery usually moves through four stages: contain the attack, work out what was affected, restore from clean backups, and close the gap that let it in. Along the way you'll face a few hard decisions. This guide explains each one in plain English.

If it's happening right now

1

Disconnect affected computers from the network

2

Don't wipe or restart systems yet

3

Call your IT provider, cyber insurer, and attorney

The stages

The four stages of recovering from ransomware

Every attack is different, but recovery tends to follow the same path. Knowing it helps you stay calm and make better decisions.

01

Contain

Stop the spread. Affected computers are disconnected and compromised accounts are locked so the attack cannot reach more systems or backups.

02

Assess

Work out what was hit: which systems, which data, whether information may have been taken, and whether clean backups exist.

03

Recover

Restore the most important systems first from backups that are confirmed clean, then bring everything else back in order.

04

Strengthen

Close the way the attacker got in, such as a stolen password, missing update, or exposed remote access, so it does not happen again.

Data recovery

Request a data recovery quote

Need files that weren’t in a backup? We’ll try what’s safe in-house and, if it needs a clean-room lab, get you a free lab evaluation and quote first. Recovery isn’t guaranteed, but it’s no data, no charge.

Until we talk, stop using the drive and don’t reset or erase it. If it’s encrypted, find the BitLocker or FileVault recovery key. Without it, no one can recover the data.

Questions

Ransomware attack recovery: common questions

Should we pay the ransom?

The FBI does not encourage paying a ransom. Paying does not guarantee your files will be restored, and it may encourage more attacks. It is a business decision to make with your insurer and attorney, ideally after you know whether clean backups exist.

How long does ransomware recovery take?

It depends on how many systems were affected and whether clean, tested backups exist. We can give you a realistic picture once we know what was hit.

Do we have to report a ransomware attack?

Can our files be recovered without paying?

Often, if clean backups exist that the attacker could not reach. That is why backups are the single biggest factor in how recovery goes. To lower the chance of a repeat, see our ransomware protection services.

Should we just wipe everything and start over?

Not right away. Wiping systems can destroy evidence your insurer or a forensic firm may need. Isolate first, then decide with them.
