What to compare
Four things to compare between IT providers
Price matters, but these decide whether it works.
01
Everyday help
How you ask for help, when someone is available, and when they come onsite.
02
Security
What protection is included, who watches for threats, and what happens in an incident.
03
Onboarding
How they take over from your current provider without disrupting your team.
04
Ownership and exit
Who holds admin passwords and documentation, and how you leave if you need to.
1. Write down what you need
Number of people and devices, the systems you rely on, any compliance needs, and what has gone wrong before.
2. Ask the same questions
Use the questions below with every provider so the answers can be compared side by side.
3. Compare written proposals
Look at what is included, what is extra, and what each provider commits to in writing.
Questions to ask
Questions about support, security, and contracts
And what a good answer sounds like.

Availability
When can staff get help?
What happens after hours?
When do you come onsite?

Who watches for threats?
How are backups tested?
What happens in an incident?
Contracts
Terms
What is included, what is extra?
Who owns our admin access?
What documentation do we get?
How do we leave if needed?
Your IT provider has deep access to your systems, so its security matters as much as yours. CISA's advisory on protecting managed service providers and their customers and its cyber guidance for small businesses explain what to look for.
Watch out
Red flags when choosing an IT provider
Be cautious when a provider promises zero downtime or complete security, won't put inclusions in writing, keeps your admin passwords to themselves, or can't explain how you would leave. Good providers explain trade-offs plainly. If you are still deciding between models, compare managed IT and in-house IT or managed IT and break-fix.

Questions
IT support buyer's guide: common questions
Have a question that isn't here? Call 310.331.8119 or schedule a free consultation.
How many providers should we compare?
Two or three is usually enough to see real differences without the process dragging on.
Should we choose the cheapest option?
Compare what is included first. A lower price that excludes security or onsite help can cost more later.
Who should own our admin passwords?
Your business should. A good provider documents access and makes sure you are never locked out of your own systems.
What if our current provider won't cooperate?
A new provider can still take over, though it may take longer. See how switching works.
